1. FC Köln have completed the signing of Georgian centre-back Luka Lochoshvili from 2. Bundesliga side 1. FC Nürnberg. The Bundesliga club will reportedly pay between €4 million and €5 million for the 28-year-old defender, who has committed to a long-term contract running until June 2029.
Lochoshvili arrives at the RheinEnergieStadion following a productive single season with Nürnberg in Germany’s second tier. The left-footed defender made 33 appearances for the club last term, contributing an impressive five goals and two assists from the back line while demonstrating his aerial threat and physical capabilities.
Sporting director hails defensive qualities
Thomas Kessler, Köln’s sporting director, welcomed the acquisition and emphasised the player’s specific attributes. “We are very pleased that we were able to convince Luka to join 1. FC Köln,” Kessler said. “He has gained valuable experience at various clubs in recent years and brings exactly the profile we were looking for in this position.”
Kessler highlighted Lochoshvili’s strength in individual duels and his commanding aerial presence as key factors in the decision. The Georgian international also offers important tactical flexibility as a left-footed centre-back, completing the club’s options in central defence and providing additional depth for the squad.
Lochoshvili targets top-flight impact
The defender expressed his excitement about stepping up to compete in the Bundesliga. “As a footballer, you always want to play at the highest level possible,” Lochoshvili stated. “That’s why I’m delighted to be joining 1. FC Köln and taking the next step in my career in the Bundesliga.”
He revealed that early discussions with club representatives proved persuasive. “The discussions with those at the club were very positive and quickly convinced me of the project,” he said. “I’m looking forward to representing such a great traditional club, playing in front of these fantastic fans, and meeting my new teammates.”
The transfer marks a significant career progression for the 28-year-old, who will now test himself against Germany’s elite attacking talent. Köln will hope his defensive solidity, aerial dominance and occasional goal threat from set-pieces can bolster their back line as they prepare for the challenges of the upcoming Bundesliga campaign.
