Lampard hails ‘once-in-a-lifetime’ Coventry City Premier League return after 25-year wait

Key Takeaways

  • Coventry City seal automatic promotion with three matches left after 1-1 draw at Blackburn.
  • Manager Frank Lampard calls the feat ‘special and unique’ for a club without parachute payments.
  • Sky Blues aim to clinch the Championship title next after opening an 11-point gap at the top.

Frank Lampard has labelled Coventry City’s march back to the Premier League a “once-in-a-lifetime” success story.

The Sky Blues will play top-flight football for the first time since 2001 after a 1-1 result at relegation-threatened Blackburn Rovers gave them the point needed to secure a top-two spot.

“To go up automatically, without parachute money, and with three games still to play… the lads have pulled off something rare,” the 47-year-old told Sky Sports.

“Coming to a tough venue and grabbing a point at this stage of the season is never simple.”

Lampard, who arrived at the CBS Arena in November 2024, said the achievement matches the biggest medals he lifted as a Chelsea and England midfielder.

“We climbed off the team bus 15 months ago not knowing what lay ahead,” he recalled. “Now we’re in love with the place and this promotion sits beside any trophy I ever won.”

Coventry’s rise follows last season’s play-off heart-break against Sunderland. In pre-season the target was merely a higher finish; instead the club has blown the race away, opening an 11-point lead over Ipswich Town, who have two games in hand.

The manager praised the groundwork laid by former boss Mark Robins and allowed the squad a small celebration after last weekend’s 0-0 draw with Sheffield Wednesday virtually sealed their fate. Training on Tuesday and Wednesday, however, quickly refocused minds on lifting the club’s first second-tier title since 1967.

“The players can enjoy a beer on the coach, then we finish the job,” Lampard said.

Owner Doug King, who took full control in January 2023, admitted sacking Robins had been unpopular but felt a “new direction” was required. He now calls the Premier League label “surreal” and believes the campaign has united the whole city.

“A quarter of a century is a long time to wait,” King said. “Front-running all season is hard, but we managed it and everyone should be proud.”
