Tottenham alert police after Kevin Danso suffers sickening online racist abuse

Key Takeaways

  • Club has passed details of online attacks on Kevin Danso to Metropolitan Police.
  • Abuse followed Spurs’ 2-2 home draw with Brighton on No Room For Racism weekend.
  • Both Tottenham and the Premier League vow to push for maximum punishment.

Tottenham Hotspur have contacted police after Austria defender Kevin Danso became the target of racist messages on social media.

The posts appeared after Saturday’s 2-2 Premier League draw with Brighton & Hove Albion, a match played during the league’s anti-racism campaign.

In a strong statement the north-London club said the language used was “vile, dehumanising and clearly a crime”, adding that it will help officers trace users both in the United Kingdom and abroad.

Danso, on loan from Lens, addressed the attacks on Instagram: “The result hurt, but the racist comments hurt more. They have no place in football or life. I will not let them affect me. I know my values and I know why I play. We keep fighting as a team.”

Spurs promised to share every piece of evidence with the Metropolitan Police and with platforms such as Instagram and X, demanding the “strongest penalties” for anyone identified.

“Kevin has our full backing,” the club added. “Criticising a performance is fair. Racism is not.”

The Premier League also backed the player, saying abusers “are not real fans” and pledging fresh co-operation with clubs, police and tech firms to stamp out discrimination.

Kick It Out, the FA and the Metropolitan Police have all been approached for further comment.
