Key Takeaways

  • Sean Longstaff struck in the 97th minute to earn Leeds a 2-2 draw at Bournemouth.
  • The point pushes Leeds nine points clear of the relegation places with four games left.
  • Bournemouth stay outside the European spots after letting a late lead slip.

Sean Longstaff’s thunderbolt deep into added time gave Leeds United a priceless 2-2 draw at AFC Bournemouth and edged the Yorkshire club closer to Premier League safety.

The midfielder, signed from Newcastle last summer, smashed home from 20 metres after the clock had passed 96 minutes, cancelling out Rayan’s 85th-minute strike for the hosts.

Leeds had earlier levelled through an own goal by Cherries defender James Hill, who deflected Wilfried Gnonto’s effort past his own keeper after Eli Junior Kroupi had opened the scoring against the run of play.

Bournemouth thought they had snatched victory when substitute Rayan converted Tyler Adams’ cross, and Evanilson saw a third goal ruled out for the tightest of offside calls.

Head coach Andoni Iraola slammed the officials, claiming Leeds striker Joël Piroe blocked goalkeeper Nikita Petrovic in the build-up to Longstaff’s equaliser. “Those two points are gone because of that decision,” he told Sky Sports.

Opposite number Daniel Farke refused to celebrate, insisting his side must secure survival mathematically. “Forty points is a good platform, but we keep our foot on the gas,” the German said.

The draw stretches Leeds’ unbeaten run to seven matches and leaves them on 40 points, while Bournemouth remain three points adrift of the Europa Conference League places.
