Key Takeaways

  • The FIFA Council has approved Afghan Women United as the official national side without requiring consent from the Taliban.
  • The squad comprises refugees living in Australia, Europe and the Middle East after fleeing Afghanistan in 2021.
  • Players can now compete internationally despite the Taliban’s ban on women’s sport in their home country.

FIFA has officially recognised Afghan Women United as the Afghanistan women’s national team. The world governing body will allow this refugee squad to compete under the national flag without approval from the Taliban-controlled football federation.

The FIFA Council ratified this historic regulation change today. Previous rules demanded recognition from the Afghanistan Football Federation. The Taliban regime refuses to acknowledge women’s football. They banned the sport when they seized power in August 2021.

The original national team formed in 2007. After the Taliban takeover, most players sought asylum abroad. The new squad includes athletes based across Australia, Europe and the Middle East. They have campaigned for over three years for official status and financial backing.

This decision forms part of FIFA’s three-pillar strategy. The programme supports women and girls from Afghanistan through diplomatic advocacy and playing opportunities. Last year, the team participated in the inaugural FIFA Unites: Women’s Series. Organisers moved the tournament from the United Arab Emirates to Morocco after authorities denied the players visas.

Fatima Haidari serves as team captain. The midfielder lives in Italy. She spoke about the emotional power of representing her country. “When I step onto the pitch, everything else disappears,” she told The Guardian. “I feel a fire inside me. I carry the hopes of many other girls with me. It is like I am holding their hands.”

The ruling marks the first time an Afghan women’s side can compete officially against the government’s wishes. It provides a clear pathway for refugee athletes to represent their homeland on the global stage.
