SERIE A -3

News Focus

  • Cremonese trail Lecce by four points with just three rounds of the season left
  • The club lost 2-1 at home to Lazio after conceding a goal during stoppage time
  • Both Pisa and Hellas Verona are already confirmed for relegation to Serie B
  • Genoa have reached the 40-point mark and are mathematically safe from the drop
  • Cagliari and Fiorentina sit nine points above the relegation zone and are virtually secure

US Cremonese face an almost impossible task to avoid relegation from Serie A following a painful home defeat to SS Lazio. The Biancocelesti scored a last-gasp winner to seal a 2-1 victory at the Stadio Giovanni Zini, leaving the hosts deep in trouble.

The result leaves Cremonese stuck on 28 points. They are now four points away from the safety zone with only three matches left to play. US Lecce currently hold the final safe position with 32 points.

The relegation picture has become clearer. Pisa and Hellas Verona are both mathematically certain to finish in the bottom three. This means only one relegation place remains available.

Elsewhere, Genoa CFC have secured their survival with 40 points. Both Cagliari Calcio and ACF Fiorentina are also effectively safe. They enjoy a nine-point cushion over the drop zone, making a dramatic collapse extremely unlikely.

The battle to avoid the final relegation spot is now a straight fight between Cremonese and Lecce. However, the four-point gap gives the Giallorossi a significant advantage.

Cremonese will face already-doomed Pisa at home next, before travelling to Udinese and finishing the campaign at home to Como. In contrast, Lecce will host Juventus, visit Sassuolo, and end their season against Genoa at the Stadio Via del Mare.

Should teams finish level on points, the league will apply head-to-head records to form a mini-table. The bottom two clubs from this calculation would then contest a play-off to decide their fate.
