- This marks the 120th injury Real Madrid have suffered across the past two campaigns

Real Madrid’s defensive problems have worsened after Ferland Mendy was ruled out for five months following surgery on a torn hamstring. The France international pulled up during Sunday’s 2-0 victory over Espanyol at the Santiago Bernabeu. He started the match under interim manager Alvaro Arbeloa but lasted only ten minutes before clutching his right leg and making way for Fran Garcia.
Medical staff have scheduled an operation to repair the muscle tear. Reports suggest the left-back will not return to training until October at the earliest. This latest setback adds to a nightmare campaign for the 30-year-old, who has managed just nine appearances totalling 448 minutes. This is a sharp fall from last season’s 31 matches and represents his fifth separate injury of the current term.
Mendy is under contract with Los Blancos until 2028. The lengthy absence may prevent him from leaving the club during the summer transfer window. He is the second defender to go under the knife this month. Brazilian centre-back Eder Militao had surgery last week and also faces five months on the sidelines.
The Spanish giants have now suffered 120 injuries across their last two campaigns. Neither Mendy, Militao nor Dani Carvajal have managed to stay fit since the club’s Champions League triumph. The medical team continues to search for solutions to keep key players available for fixtures.
