Manchester United are weighing up an approach for Olympique Lyonnais talent Afonso Moreira ahead of the next transfer window. The Premier League side have been tracking the 21-year-old closely as they look to strengthen their options on the flank.
The Portuguese youngster moved to Lyon from Sporting CP last summer for a modest fee of €2 million. Since arriving in France, he has developed into a crucial member of Paulo Fonseca’s squad. He initially joined as a prospect, but an injury to Malick Fofana in early autumn thrust him into the starting eleven. The winger has since started 21 of his 35 matches and has become a fan favourite at the Groupama Stadium.
Moreira has been directly involved in 19 goals this campaign, scoring eight and creating 11 assists. His displays have caught the attention of scouts across Europe, with several top teams from Italy and Germany also registering their interest.
Although the attacker’s contract runs until 2029, Lyon plan to reward his form with an extension until 2030. Despite this show of faith, major European clubs could still lure him away. Sporting CP negotiated a 20% sell-on clause when they sold him, meaning they will profit from any future deal. Current estimates value the player at €10 million, though a bidding war could force the price much higher.
