Former Italy striker Alessandro Altobelli is devastated. He cannot travel to his best friend’s funeral. The 1982 World Cup hero is stuck in Kuwait.
Altobelli works as a TV pundit in the Middle East. He wanted to fly to Brescia for the service of Evaristo Beccalossi. However, there are no flights available from Kuwait to Europe.
Beccalossi died on May 6 at the age of 69. He was a former midfielder for Inter Milan. His funeral happens today in his hometown. Many former Nerazzurri players will be there. Beppe Bergomi is expected to attend.
The two men were very close friends. They played together at Inter. They won the Serie A title in 1980. Altobelli is the club’s second-best goal scorer. He scored 209 goals for the Milan side.
“I am devastated,” Altobelli said. “There are no flights. He was my best friend. He was like a second father to my sons.”
The journey back to Kuwait had already been difficult. Altobelli spent eight hours in Istanbul airport. He had to rest on a chair. Now he cannot leave.
“Part of me has died with him,” Altobelli added.
