Kevin Wangaya has set his sights on representing Kenya. The Nairobi United midfielder hopes his recent form will catch the eye of Harambee Stars selectors.
The young defensive midfielder recently picked up the FKF Premier League Player of the Month award for April. His performances have been central to his club’s surge up the table.
During April, Wangaya found the net three times and set up four goals. His side remained unbeaten throughout the month with three victories and one draw.
The 22-year-old opened his account on April 1 against Mara Sugar. He struck again and provided an assist in the 4-2 victory over Murang’a Seal two weeks later.
His scoring run continued in the FKF Cup against Posta Rangers, where he helped secure a 2-0 win. He then netted against Mathare United to seal another three points.
Despite his individual brilliance, Wangaya praises his teammates. He insists the award belongs to the entire Nairobi United family.
The player joined the Johnson Sakaja-owned club in January after a spell without a team. He kept fit by playing in local estate competitions during his time away from professional football.
His return has been remarkable. He has adapted quickly to top-flight football and is now one of the division’s most exciting talents.
This Sunday brings an emotional reunion. Nairobi United travel to Police Sacco Stadium to face Wangaya’s former employers, Kariobangi Sharks.
The midfielder holds great respect for his old club. He credits them with developing his skills and shaping his career.
He also singled out Humphrey Aroko for praise. The Sharks midfielder won the March Player of the Month award, and Wangaya admits he voted for his former colleague.
Nairobi United currently sit fourth in the table with 48 points. This represents a superb return for a team that only gained promotion from the National Super League this season.
Their opponents on Sunday occupy 16th place with 30 points. Wangaya warns that Sharks remain dangerous despite their lowly position.
The clash kicks off on Sunday evening.
