- Assistant coach Mohammed Mchulla will manage the team for the final three matches of the season
- The club currently sits in 14th position with 35 points in the league table
- Kamau won only four out of 16 league games during the 2026 calendar year
Mathare United have ended their partnership with head coach John Kamau. The club announced the move on Monday, May 11, 2026. The decision follows a 2-0 defeat against APS Bomet on Sunday.
The loss to the 12th-placed side forced the club leadership to take action. They decided to change the manager to protect the team from relegation danger. Only three games remain in the 2025/2026 FKF Premier League season.
Mohammed Mchulla will take charge of the squad for now. He is the assistant coach. His main task is to collect enough points from the remaining fixtures. This will ensure Mathare stay in the top division next term.
Kamau’s second spell at the club has ended badly. His team managed just four victories in 16 league matches this year. This poor record left the 2008 champions fighting to avoid the drop.
Last week, Mathare played a 2-2 draw with Sofapaka. That result confirmed Sofapaka’s relegation to a lower league. However, Kamau criticised his players after the match. He claimed they lacked fighting spirit and wasted too many scoring opportunities.
The team has struggled at the back throughout the campaign. They suffered a painful 2-1 home loss to KCB in February. These repeated setbacks convinced the board to dismiss the coach.
Mathare now occupy 14th spot with 35 points. They travel to face Mara Sugar on Saturday afternoon. The temporary manager must stabilise the squad quickly. The club will search for a permanent replacement to rebuild the side for the 2026/2027 season.
