SC Freiburg have announced that young defender Berkay Yilmaz will return to the club ahead of the 2026/27 season. The 21-year-old left-back has spent the last two campaigns on loan at 1. FC Nürnberg in the second tier.
The Bundesliga club confirmed on Monday that Yilmaz has agreed to a new deal. However, they did not state how long the contract will run.
Klemens Hartenbach, the sporting director at Freiburg, spoke highly of the player’s progress during his time away. He noted that Yilmaz adapted well to the second division and showed a strong ability to balance attacking moves with defensive duties. Hartenbach also praised the player’s love for the club, stating that he feels fully at home there. This connection, he added, provides an excellent base to improve the finer points of his game. He also thanked 1. FC Nürnberg for their outstanding cooperation throughout the loan period.
Yilmaz featured 58 times for Nürnberg, scoring once and creating eight goals for his teammates. The defender expressed his gratitude for his time at the club but confirmed that his ambition was always to establish himself at Freiburg. He said he is excited to play at the Europa-Park Stadion and looks forward to celebrating success with the team.
