Paris, France – Olympique Lyonnais are facing the prospect of missing out on European football entirely next season. This development comes despite the team’s strong position in the domestic league table.
With only one fixture left in the Ligue 1 campaign, Paulo Fonseca’s squad sits in fourth place. This standing would normally guarantee entry into the preliminary qualifying rounds of the Champions League. The team could still climb to third position, which offers direct access to the competition’s league phase. However, they might also fall to fifth, which would mean Europa League football instead.
Yet league position may prove irrelevant. According to reports from The Telegraph, European football’s governing body could impose a complete ban. The alleged reason concerns a broken financial agreement.
Last term, Lyon faced administrative demotion due to monetary issues under former owner John Textor. Although officials later reversed this decision, Textor subsequently exited the club. The team participated in this season’s Europa League after striking a deal with UEFA.
However, sources suggest Lyon failed to honour specific terms of that summer arrangement. The club allegedly missed a deadline to invest €60 million and complete share conversions. When approached for comment, Lyon representatives dismissed these figures as exaggerated.
UEFA has not yet confirmed whether it will enforce the exclusion regardless of where Lyon finish in the table.
