Italian winger Stephan El Shaarawy has confirmed he will leave AS Roma at the end of the current season. His contract expires on 30 June, bringing an end to a ten-year association with the Serie A side.

The 32-year-old made the announcement with only two matches remaining. Roma face city rivals Lazio in the Rome derby before travelling to Hellas Verona on the final day. El Shaarawy will then leave the Italian capital as a free agent.

El Shaarawy first moved to the Stadio Olimpico in January 2016 from AC Milan. He spent three and a half years with the club before joining Shanghai Shenhua in China in 2019. The forward returned to Rome in January 2021 and has been an important member of the squad since.

During his time with the club, El Shaarawy made 346 appearances in all competitions. He scored 65 goals and created 50 more for his team-mates. His finest moment came in the 2021/22 season when Roma won the UEFA Conference League under manager José Mourinho. This success ended the club’s 61-year wait for a European trophy.

The player has become one of the most popular figures among Roma supporters. However, coach Gian Piero Gasperini had hoped to keep him at the club. The manager pushed for new contracts for El Shaarawy and three other players earlier this month. The winger’s statement now confirms that these talks did not lead to a new agreement.

El Shaarawy has played for Italy at international level. He is also eligible to represent Egypt through his father. He now faces an uncertain future as he searches for a new club ahead of next season.
