Mohamed Salah has issued a powerful call for Liverpool to rediscover their aggressive “heavy metal” football before he leaves the club this summer. The 33-year-old Egyptian striker made the demand after watching the Reds fall to a painful 4-2 defeat against Aston Villa on Friday evening.
The loss marked Liverpool’s 19th defeat of a difficult season. It has also placed their hopes of securing a top-five finish in serious doubt. Only a place in the Premier League’s upper reaches will guarantee entry into next season’s Champions League.
Salah will depart Anfield after nine years when the final whistle blows against Brentford next Sunday. During his time on Merseyside, he has lifted six major trophies including two Premier League crowns and the Champions League. He has found the net 257 times for the Reds.
Writing on social media, the forward did not hold back his feelings about the team’s current struggles. He stated that Liverpool must become “the heavy metal attacking team that opponents fear” once again. This phrase refers to the high-energy, pressing style made famous by former manager Jurgen Klopp during his nine-year spell at the club.
Salah’s words appeared to question the methods of current head coach Arne Slot. The Dutchman took charge in 2024 and led Liverpool to the Premier League title in his first season. However, this campaign has proved far more challenging.
“This identity needs to be recovered and kept for good,” Salah wrote. “It cannot be negotiable. Everyone that joins this club should adapt to it.”
The winger’s post received strong support from within the dressing room. Teammates Curtis Jones and Hugo Ekitike replied with emojis, while Andrew Robertson, Ryan Gravenberch and Dominik Szoboszlai were among those who liked the message. Former captain Jordan Henderson and defender Trent Alexander-Arnold also showed their approval.
Robertson, who is also leaving this summer, wrote his own emotional message to supporters. He admitted the display at Villa Park “sums up our season” and fell “a long way short” of expected standards.
Salah has struggled to match his previous form this term. He has scored only 12 goals in 40 matches across all competitions. This is a sharp drop from the 29 Premier League strikes he managed last season.
Despite the heavy criticism, Slot remains confident he will keep his job. He pointed to an injury crisis that has left him without nine first-team players. The Dutchman believes the summer transfer window will prove crucial for rebuilding the squad.
“Winning some games here and there is not what Liverpool should be about,” Salah added. “All teams win games. I want to see it succeed for long after I have moved on.”
The Egyptian insisted that qualifying for the Champions League represents “the bare minimum” for the club. He promised to do everything possible to secure that goal in his final appearance against Brentford.
