Former England international Danny Murphy has cast doubt on Bayern Munich’s rumoured pursuit of Newcastle United winger Anthony Gordon. The ex-Liverpool and Fulham midfielder admitted he feels surprised by reports linking the 25-year-old with the German champions.

Speaking to talkSPORT, Murphy suggested the Newcastle wide man would struggle to break into Vincent Kompany’s first team. He compared Gordon unfavourably to Liverpool’s Luis Diaz, stating the English attacker fails to match the Colombian’s quality.

The 49-year-old praised Gordon’s individual strengths but criticised his patchy form. Murphy noted the player’s impressive European performances this term, though he pointed out that penalty duties inflated his goal tally. This season marks Gordon’s most prolific campaign to date.

However, the pundit acknowledged the financial rewards awaiting Gordon in Bavaria. Bayern would reportedly offer wages far exceeding his current St James’ Park contract. A switch to Munich would also provide stronger prospects of winning silverware.

With approximately 60 fixtures per season, the winger would receive some playing time. Murphy attempted to view the situation from the player’s perspective, but he delivered a cautious warning. Beyond the monetary benefits, the former midfielder suggested regular substitute appearances likely await.

Sources indicate Bayern view the Magpies star as a squad rotation option. Manager Vincent Kompany requires cover to rest his key attackers during a demanding schedule across all competitions.
