FSV Mainz 05 have announced the arrival of Eric Martel from 1.FC Köln. The midfielder has joined the club on a free transfer.

Martel is 24 years old and hails from Straubing. He primarily plays in defensive midfield but can also slot into central defence when required.

The former Germany Under-21 international arrives with valuable experience. He has played 90 matches in the Bundesliga and a further 31 games in the second division.

During his time at Köln, Martel also featured in the UEFA Conference League and the DFB-Pokal. He was a regular starter for the club before making this switch.

Niko Bungert, the sporting director at Mainz, expressed his delight at the signing. He noted that Martel combines proven quality with potential for further growth.

“Eric is excellent at running and tackling,” Bungert said. “He will strengthen our squad both on the pitch and in the dressing room.”

The club confirmed the deal through an official statement on their website. Martel becomes their latest addition ahead of the new campaign.
