  • Hansi Flick signs one-year extension keeping him at Barcelona until 2028
  • German boss has won five of six available domestic trophies in two seasons
  • Champions League semi-final and quarter-final exits remain only major disappointments
  • Club confirmed 13 academy graduates made debuts under his management
  • Contract includes option for additional year beyond 2028

FC Barcelona have confirmed that head coach Hansi Flick has agreed fresh terms that extend his stay at Camp Nou by twelve months. The German tactician will now remain with the Catalan giants until the summer of 2028 following a hugely successful second campaign in charge.

The announcement came during the club’s final home match of the season against Real Betis on Sunday evening. Interim President Rafa Yuste and Sporting Director Deco both attended the ceremony as the club celebrated Flick’s achievements. The 59-year-old has delivered the La Liga championship and the Spanish Supercup during his time at the helm.

Flick has established a remarkable record in domestic competitions. He has claimed victory in five out of six possible trophies across his two seasons. Atletico Madrid represent the only side to deny him silverware, having knocked Barcelona out of the Copa del Rey semi-finals in March.

European success has proved more elusive. The Bavarian coach watched his side fall in the Champions League semi-finals to Inter Milan during his first year. This season brought another continental disappointment with a quarter-final defeat against city rivals Atletico Madrid.

However, Flick’s dominance in clashes against Real Madrid stands out. He has guided his team to six victories from seven El Clasico encounters. His faith in youth has also impressed supporters, with thirteen players from the renowned La Masia academy making their first-team debuts under his guidance.

Last week, the former Bayern Munich boss revealed his thinking behind the extension. He explained that the deal provides stability for his coaching staff while protecting both parties’ interests. The contract includes an option for an additional year beyond 2028 if both sides agree.

“The arrangement benefits everyone,” Flick stated. “Long contracts please many managers, but this limit suits Barcelona well. We work until 2028, then review our options. Both the club and I have decision rights. Recent events prove we enjoy strong backing and possess the right infrastructure.”

The club now turns attention to summer recruitment. Reports suggest Barcelona plan to strengthen their attack with two new forwards before next season begins.
