- Højbjerg is open to leaving Marseille following the departure of his close friend Adrien Rabiot
Turkish sides have set their sights on signing Olympique de Marseille’s midfield general Pierre-Emile Højbjerg. The Denmark star has attracted concrete interest from the Süper Lig, reports French publication L’Équipe.
The 30-year-old now faces an uncertain future at the Stade Vélodrome. Marseille failed to secure a place in next season’s Champions League. This disappointment has forced the club to reduce their wage bill and generate funds through player sales.
Club bosses have made nearly the entire squad available for transfer. Højbjerg carries a price tag of roughly €10 million. His current contract with Les Phocéens runs until 2028.
The former Tottenham Hotspur man has served as one of Marseille’s key leaders this term. He has often worn the captain’s armband since manager Roberto De Zerbi removed it from defender Leonardo Balerdi earlier in the campaign.
However, financial problems now threaten to cut short his time in France. The Ligue 1 outfit urgently need to offload their highest-paid stars. Sources close to the player suggest he would welcome a move to Turkey.
His willingness to leave partly stems from personal reasons. The midfielder formed a close bond with French international Adrien Rabiot. Rabiot’s controversial exit at the start of the season left a significant emotional impact on the Danish player.
