- Pep Guardiola is the FIGC’s dream appointment but is leaving Manchester City
- Mancini would accept a salary of around €2m per season to return to Coverciano
Roberto Mancini has not given up hope of managing Italy again. However, Antonio Conte remains the top choice for the role.
The Italian Football Federation (FIGC) will appoint a new manager following their presidential election on 22 June 2026. La Gazzetta dello Sport says the ideal pick is Pep Guardiola. The Spanish coach plans to end his ten-year stay at Manchester City.
Despite this, Conte is the main contender. The current Napoli boss is expected to depart the Serie A club when the campaign finishes.
Both Gazzetta and Corriere dello Sport list Mancini as a serious option. Corriere claims the former Italy boss would accept just €2 million per year to come back to the national team centre in Coverciano.
Claudio Ranieri and AC Milan’s Massimiliano Allegri are also in the frame. Allegri’s position at San Siro is shaky because he does not agree with club officials Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Giorgio Furlani.
Mancini quit as Italy boss in August 2023 to take charge of Saudi Arabia. He stayed in that post for only 14 months, exiting in October 2024. The 59-year-old recently lifted the Qatari league trophy with Al Sadd. He celebrated the win with a tribute to Italy’s Euro 2020 triumph.
