Nineteen-year-old striker Eli Junior Kroupi is enjoying a remarkable first season in the Premier League. The Bournemouth forward has found the net 13 times since arriving from FC Lorient. No other teenage player has scored more goals during their debut campaign in England’s top flight.
His most recent strike came against Manchester City last Tuesday. That goal proved decisive in sealing the league title for Arsenal. Such form has attracted attention from several clubs across Europe. However, Bournemouth insist they will not sell their star asset. Their qualification for European competition next season strengthens their bargaining position.
Yet club interest was not the only approach the young striker received. Portugal also made a move to secure his international allegiance. Kroupi holds eligibility for Portugal through his mother, despite currently featuring for France’s under-21 side.
Portugal head coach Roberto Martinez confirmed the failed approach on Tuesday. Speaking while naming his World Cup squad, Martinez explained that contact was made before the March international break. “We acted before the news became public. We can approach players who qualify for our jersey, but the player’s desire is what matters. Junior wishes to play for France. We respect that decision, and the matter is closed,” he stated.
Despite choosing France, Kroupi will not travel to the World Cup this summer. Didier Deschamps omitted the Bournemouth attacker from his final squad. If the teenager maintains his current scoring rate next season, however, a senior international debut could follow.
