Former Germany centre-half Mats Hummels has praised Julian Nagelsmann’s squad selection for the 2026 World Cup. The 2014 winner believes the manager has avoided any shocking omissions or inclusions.

Speaking to Magenta TV, the ex-Borussia Dortmund and Bayern Munich star described the group as free from major disputes. He stated that the only real uncertainty surrounded Manuel Neuer’s place in the team.

Hummels noted that most people expected Neuer to make the cut if he remained fit. He also pointed out that Nagelsmann faced difficult choices regarding three players: Nadiem Amiri, Pascal Groß and Malik Thiaw.

The defender added that no other selections caused significant debate. He views these fringe players as squad options rather than guaranteed starters, though they could still feature during the competition.

Hummels admitted he shares the public’s cautious outlook about Germany’s prospects. However, he suggested that tactical adjustments from the coach could improve their hopes of lifting the trophy.

He rated the national team as talented but not among the leading contenders. Even so, he insisted they possess sufficient quality to challenge for victory.

The former centre-back identified several weaknesses that require attention. He concluded that fixing these issues would allow Germany to perform strongly on the world stage.
