Real Madrid have confirmed that David Alaba will depart the club at the end of the current campaign. The Spanish giants announced on Friday that the Austrian centre-back will exit when his contract expires this summer.

The 33-year-old spent five seasons at the Santiago Bernabeu after arriving from Bayern Munich without a transfer fee in 2021. During his time with Los Blancos, he collected 11 major honours. These include two Champions League trophies, two La Liga titles, and one Copa del Rey.

Alaba made 131 appearances for the club, scoring five goals and providing nine assists. He played a crucial role in the 2022 Champions League victory. However, knee problems have troubled him during the past two years. These injuries reduced his playing time and affected his form.

Club president Florentino Perez praised the defender’s contribution. He highlighted Alaba’s dedication and his famous celebration during the 14th European Cup triumph. Perez stated that Real Madrid will always welcome Alaba back.

The defender is not the only veteran leaving this weekend. Dani Carvajal will also say goodbye to supporters during Saturday’s match against Athletic Club. Meanwhile, manager Alvaro Arbeloa confirmed he will step down after the same fixture.

Alaba plans to captain Austria at the upcoming World Cup. His next club remains unknown.
