The 2025-26 La Liga season has ended with dramatic relegation battles. Two clubs will compete in the Segunda División next term after failing to secure their safety on the final day.
Girona FC have suffered relegation following a 1-1 draw against Elche CF. The visitors took the lead through Álvaro Rodríguez. Arnau Martínez levelled for Girona after half-time, but the home side could not find a winner. The result confirms Elche’s place in the top flight while sending Girona down after four campaigns. Manager Míchel Sánchez is expected to leave the club, and several players will depart during the summer transfer window.
RCD Mallorca also face the drop despite winning their final match. Goals from Pablo Torre, Manu Morlanes and Vedat Muriqi secured a comfortable victory. However, Elche’s draw at Girona meant Mallorca’s three points were not enough to save them. The club returns to the second tier after five consecutive seasons in La Liga.
Elsewhere, Valencia CF produced a stunning comeback to defeat champions FC Barcelona 3-1 at the Mestalla. Levante UD survived despite losing 2-1 to Real Betis. The green-and-whites took an early lead through Moroccan winger Ez Abde. Carlos Espi equalised for Levante, but Pablo Fornals restored Betis’s advantage. Other results favoured Levante, ensuring their safety.
Real Madrid CF ended their campaign with an exciting win over Athletic Club. The match featured six goals in total at the Santiago Bernabéu.
Rayo Vallecano finished eighth after beating Deportivo Alavés 2-1. The Madrid club fell behind to Toni Martínez’s opener but fought back with goals from Sergio Camello and Angolan forward Randy Nteka. They will now focus on the UEFA Conference League final in Leipzig.
Getafe CF secured European football by qualifying for the Conference League. RC Celta de Vigo claimed sixth place and a Europa League spot after Guinea international Ilaix Moriba scored the only goal in their 1-0 win over Sevilla FC.
Finally, RCD Espanyol drew 1-1 with Real Sociedad. Orri Óskarsson gave the visitors the lead, but Carlos Fernández earned a point for the home side.
