AC Milan have terminated the contract of head coach Massimiliano Allegri just twelve months into his second spell at the club. The decision follows a dramatic end to the Serie A season that saw the seven-time European champions miss out on a top-four finish.
The Rossoneri slipped from third position to fifth in the final standings after suffering a 2-1 loss to Cagliari on Sunday. This result means Milan will watch the Champions League from the sidelines for the second year running. Instead, they will join Juventus in next season’s Europa League.
Inter Milan, Napoli, Roma and surprise package Como will fly the Italian flag in Europe’s elite competition.
In a strongly-worded statement, RedBird Capital Partners – the American investment firm that purchased the club in 2022 – expressed deep frustration with the campaign’s conclusion. “For most of this season, we held a place in the top two and had a realistic chance to fight for the Scudetto,” the statement read. “The final weeks did not match our earlier standards. The defeat on the last day made this an unequivocal failure.”
The shake-up extends beyond the dugout. Chief executive Giorgio Furlani, sporting director Igli Tare and technical director Geoffrey Moncada have all exited their posts as the club promises a “comprehensive reorganization” of its football operations.
Allegri, aged 58, returned to the San Siro last May to replace Sergio Conceicao. During his first tenure from 2010 to 2014, he delivered the Serie A title in 2011 and the Italian Super Cup. However, his second coming ended in disappointment after the team collected just a handful of points from their final fourteen fixtures.
Inter Milan capitalised on Milan’s poor form to secure their second league championship in three seasons.
