Laurin Curda was the hero for SC Paderborn on Monday night. The centre-back scored the winning goal in their 2-1 play-off victory over VfL Wolfsburg. This result secured the club’s immediate return to the Bundesliga.
The 24-year-old defender netted the decisive strike during the tense two-legged tie against the top division side. His goal proved enough to seal promotion for his team.
Speaking after the match, Curda admitted he felt emotional. The young player could not immediately understand the full importance of the moment.
“I will need many days to fully accept what we achieved here,” he stated. “The red card for Wolfsburg made our task less difficult.”
Curda explained his goal came from following the team’s tactics. The defender positioned himself well inside the penalty area.
“We planned to send many crosses into the box,” he said. “I stayed alert in the danger zone. We controlled the game completely, so I am happy our hard work brought success.”
The result means Paderborn will compete in Germany’s top division next season. Wolfsburg drop down to the second tier following the play-off defeat.
