- Statement describes season as “unequivocal failure” following collapse in final weeks
AC Milan have removed head coach Massimiliano Allegri and three top executives after the team failed to reach next season’s Champions League.
The Italian club needed just one point from their final Serie A match against Cagliari to finish in the top four. However, they lost 2-1 at home on Sunday, even though they scored first against a team with nothing to play for.
This defeat caused owner Gerry Cardinale to sack Allegri, chief executive Giorgio Furlani, sporting director Igli Tare, and technical director Geoffrey Moncada on Monday.
In a message on the club website, Cardinale called the season an “unequivocal failure.” He said the team was in the top two for most of the year and could have won the Scudetto, but the final matches were very bad.
Allegri leaves after only 42 games. He won 22 matches during his short time at the club. He joined last summer with Tare, so both men leave after less than one year.
Furlani became CEO in 2022 after joining the board in 2019. He worked closely with the previous owners, Elliott Management. Cardinale has now paid off the loan from Elliott, so he no longer needs Furlani.
Moncada worked as chief scout for seven years before becoming technical director in 2023. He also leaves the club.
Only special advisor Zlatan Ibrahimovic keeps his job. He will help Cardinale find new people to fill the four empty positions before next season starts.
The club said they will announce new appointments soon as they try to rebuild their football operations.
