Barcelona captain Ronald Araujo has shared details about his mental health struggles during the 2025-26 season. The Uruguayan defender missed nearly two months of football between November and January to focus on his wellbeing.

The centre-back says a red card against Chelsea in the Champions League was the turning point. Araujo explained that he had hidden painful feelings from his childhood for many years. These problems meant he could not enjoy life or support his family properly.

“I knew something was wrong,” Araujo stated. “I did not feel happy. At home, I was not the husband or father my family needed. I kept everything inside until I finally broke down. That moment against Chelsea made me realise I needed help.”

The 27-year-old praised the reaction from Barcelona’s staff and players. He spoke first with sporting director Deco, then with club officials Alejandro and Bojan, plus the president. His teammates also sent supportive messages during his time away.

“The club handled everything naturally and with respect,” Araujo said. “I will always be grateful to my teammates. Their trust gave me motivation to recover.”

Now Araujo feels ready to play for Uruguay at this summer’s World Cup. Despite rumours linking him with a move away from Camp Nou, the captain insists he is happy and excited for the future.

“I have learned to see football and life differently,” he explained. “My best years are still to come.”
