Barcelona have handed Dani Olmo a significant pay rise. The Catalan giants activated a clause in the midfielder’s contract to improve his financial terms. This reward comes after the Spain star accepted a lower salary to help the club manage their strict salary limits when he first joined.
The 28-year-old returned to his boyhood club from RB Leipzig in the summer of 2024. Barcelona paid €55 million to secure his signature. At the time, Olmo turned down more lucrative offers from elsewhere. He agreed to reduced wages so that Barcelona could register him within La Liga’s financial fair play rules.
Both parties agreed that the midfielder would receive improved terms after two seasons. That period has now passed, and the club has honoured the agreement. Olmo’s contract, which extends until 2030, now reflects better wages to compensate for his initial sacrifice.
It has not been an easy start for the playmaker. Minor injuries disrupted his first campaign at the Estadi Olímpic. During his second season, he struggled to find consistent form until the final two months. He now faces a battle to keep his place in the starting eleven.
Fermin Lopez has delivered excellent performances in the number 10 role. Additionally, new signing Anthony Gordon can operate on the left wing. This may prompt manager Hansi Flick to shift Raphinha into Olmo’s central position. The coach has praised Olmo highly, but the midfielder must prove his worth next term.
Meanwhile, Barcelona continue to work on their summer plans. The club must raise between €30 million and €50 million through player sales. These funds are necessary to register their new targets for the upcoming season.
