Rafael Leao has strongly suggested that he will depart AC Milan this summer. The Portuguese forward believes he has completed his mission at the San Siro after spending seven seasons with the Italian giants.
Speaking to Sport TV in an interview reported by Sky, the 26-year-old explained his desire for a fresh start. He stated clearly that he wishes to test himself in a different league away from Serie A.
“I feel I have given everything I can to this club,” Leao said. “Milan helped me grow as a player and supported me during difficult moments. I am proud that I managed to write my name into Rossoneri history.”
The winger added that every footballer has personal dreams and ambitions. He wants to face new challenges elsewhere in Europe. “If the chance comes to play in a new league, I would be very happy. I know I worked hard and did a good job here,” he explained.
AC Milan currently faces a period of great uncertainty. The club lacks a head coach, a sporting director, a technical director and a chief executive. Reports suggest that other key players, such as Luka Modric and Adrien Rabiot, could also leave the club. The Rossoneri will not compete in the Champions League next term.
Leao arrived at Milan in 2019 and played a vital role in winning the Scudetto title in 2022. He won the league’s Most Valuable Player award that season. However, his performances dropped after manager Massimiliano Allegri moved him from the left wing to a centre-forward role during the 2025-26 campaign.
Before any transfer takes place, Leao must focus on his international duties. He aims to perform well for Portugal at the 2026 World Cup. Only after that tournament will he seriously consider his next career move.
“The World Cup is my main priority now,” he stated. “I want to help my national team succeed. Once the tournament finishes, I will study the best options to continue competing at the highest level in Europe.”
