The Fletcher family planned to travel to the United States this summer as supporters. Darren Fletcher, Tyler’s father and a former Scotland captain with eighty international caps, intended to watch from the stands. He never participated in a major tournament during his playing days. Now his son will wear the national shirt on the pitch instead.
Sixteen-year-old Tyler has made only two substitute appearances for Manchester United’s senior side. Sixteen of those seventeen minutes came against Brighton on the final day of the Premier League season. Scotland manager Steve Clarke selected him anyway after monitoring his progress closely.
The young midfielder joined Scotland’s training camp last week to learn international standards. Coaches were impressed by his professionalism, diligence, and attitude. When Billy Gilmour picked up an injury during the first half of the friendly against Curacao, Fletcher replaced him at half-time. He displayed maturity beyond his years.
This situation mirrors Norman Whiteside’s call-up to Northern Ireland’s 1982 World Cup squad. The former Manchester United star also joined after just two senior appearances.
Tyler’s twin brother Jack also plays for Manchester United but chose England at youth level. The brothers faced each other in an Under-19 European Championship qualifier last November. While Jack started the season ahead, Tyler finished stronger. He recently collected Manchester United’s Under-21 Player of the Year award.
Tyler usually operates as a number six or number eight. He possesses excellent stamina and athletic ability. Coaches describe him as confident yet low maintenance, polite and conscientious. His physical development continues to progress steadily.
Darren Fletcher manages Manchester United’s Under-18 team. He ensured his sons progressed beyond youth level before accepting the coaching position. This prevented any conflicts of interest during their development.
Manchester United staff believe Tyler has significant potential. They praise his vision, ball control, and tactical understanding. Captain Bruno Fernandes invited him to the senior squad dinner at the end of the season. Previously, he expected to join pre-season tours in Helsinki and Norway. Now he prepares for the World Cup finals.
Tyler described his February debut against Tottenham as the best day of his life. That memory may now rank second.
