VfL Wolfsburg have finalised the acquisition of Fraser Hornby from SV Darmstadt 98. The 26-year-old has signed a long-term deal that will keep him at the club until 2030.
The German side dropped down to the 2. Bundesliga last term. They now view the Scottish striker as a vital asset in their push to climb straight back to the top division.
Pirmin Schwegler, the club’s sporting director, praised the new recruit’s qualities. He stated that Hornby brings a rare mix of dynamism, technical ability, and strong character. Schwegler also noted that the forward’s experience in the second tier and his previous role as vice-captain at Darmstadt make him a perfect fit for the squad.
Schwegler revealed that Hornby turned down offers from Bundesliga clubs to make the switch. He said the player’s clear desire to join Wolfsburg convinced them to complete the transfer.
Hornby enjoyed a productive campaign last season, finding the net 13 times and providing eight assists in 25 league matches for Darmstadt.
The forward expressed his excitement about the move. He explained that a visit to the club weeks ago gave him a positive feeling about the project. He knew immediately that this was the right next step for his career. Hornby said he is proud to wear the shirt and eager to help the team achieve promotion.
