Only 300 fans gathered near the famous Rock of Gibraltar to watch Northern Ireland take on Guinea in a friendly clash. The small crowd witnessed history as Michael O’Neill’s side broke their own record for the youngest starting team since the Second World War.
The Northern Irish line-up in La Linea had an average age of just 22.1 years. This beat the previous record set against Luxembourg in November 2024. Several teenagers played key roles in the hard-fought 1-0 victory.
Nineteen-year-old Tom Atcheson of Blackburn Rovers scored the only goal of the game. However, the young forward later received a red card for a last-man tackle. Northern Ireland had to play the final 25 minutes with ten men.
Despite the disadvantage, the team showed great character to hold on for the win. This reminded many of their victory against Iceland one year ago, when they also won 1-0 with ten players after Brodie Spencer was sent off.
Manager Michael O’Neill handed debuts to Liverpool youngster Kieran Morrison and Arsenal teenager Ceadach O’Neill. Goalkeeper Pierce Charles, aged 20 and currently linked with a move away from Sheffield Wednesday, played the first half. His older brother Shea Charles, who has 35 caps at just 22, praised the new faces.
‘I feel like one of the old ones now, which is a bit mad,’ said the Southampton midfielder. ‘It is really important to get the younger ones to mould into the group well.’
Justin Devenny, who recently enjoyed success with Crystal Palace in the Conference League, also praised the fresh talent. ‘There is some real quality coming through,’ said the 22-year-old. ‘They have fitted in brilliantly.’
Luke Southwood, aged 28, earned only his second cap when he replaced Pierce Charles at half-time. The goalkeeper proved his worth by pushing a powerful shot from Lass Kourouma onto the crossbar during injury time to secure the victory. Experienced attackers Jamie Reid and Josh Magennis also joined the action to help protect the lead.
The future looks bright for Northern Ireland as O’Neill has signed a new contract until 2032. The team will now travel to Lille to face France on Monday in their final warm-up match before the World Cup qualifiers resume.
Shea Charles believes playing against the world’s best teams helps the squad. ‘There is not much fear here. There is more excitement than nerves,’ he explained. Devenny added that facing the World Cup favourites would allow them to ‘show our quality’ on the big stage.
