Heavy thunderstorms forced a one-hour delay to kick-off at Orlando City Stadium. Despite the difficult conditions, England produced a professional performance to beat Costa Rica 3-0 in front of 25,500 fans.
Anthony Gordon delivered an outstanding display on the left wing. The Barcelona winger used his pace to trouble the Costa Rica defence throughout the match. He set up the first goal with a clever run to the byline, cutting the ball back for Declan Rice to score via a deflection.
Gordon doubled the lead from the penalty spot in the second half after Eberechi Eze was fouled in the box. Substitute Ollie Watkins then sealed the victory with a close-range finish late in the game.
Jude Bellingham once again proved his importance to the team. The midfielder received the captain’s armband when Harry Kane left the pitch. Bellingham created several chances with excellent passing and dribbled past four defenders during the move that won the penalty.
Thomas Tuchel started with a strong team for the first hour. Reece James and Nico O’Reilly looked solid at full-back, while John Stones partnered Ezri Konsa in the centre of defence. Declan Rice played his first minutes of the camp after arriving late due to club commitments.
England could have won by a larger margin. Noni Madueke missed an easy chance in the first half, shooting against the post with the goal open. Morgan Rogers also wasted a good opportunity after coming off the bench.
Tuchel spoke positively about his team’s work after the final whistle. He praised their pressing, defensive organisation, and attacking energy. The manager confirmed they will play one more closed-door friendly against Miami FC before travelling to Kansas to prepare for Croatia.
