The United States silenced their critics with a commanding performance on Saturday. The tournament hosts demolished Paraguay 4-1 to begin their 2026 World Cup campaign in perfect fashion. This result suggests they are ready to compete with football’s elite nations.
The occasion carried immense pressure. A star-studded opening ceremony featured a performance by Katy Perry. Hollywood actor Tom Cruise watched from the stands alongside thousands of supporters dressed in red, white and blue. Despite the glitzy build-up, the American players showed no signs of nerves.
They dominated the first 45 minutes completely. The home side netted three times before the interval while enjoying 71% possession. Gio Reyna added a superb fourth goal during stoppage time. This marked the nation’s largest World Cup winning margin since 1930.
Manager Mauricio Pochettino has reshaped the team since taking charge 20 months ago. The Argentine coach has introduced a high-pressing system that overwhelmed the South American opponents. He has also changed the squad’s mentality, urging them to believe they can win the trophy rather than simply participate.
The squad now boasts genuine quality throughout. Seventeen players in the 26-man group compete in Europe’s top five leagues. Seven of those represent Premier League clubs. Former USA goalkeeper Tony Meola, who played in three World Cups, believes the nation has finally arrived as a footballing power. “We have players across the world and facilities that others envy,” he commented. “We are now a proper football nation.”

However, the victory was not without concern. Star forward Christian Pulisic provided an assist but did not appear for the second half. Striker Folarin Balogun scored twice before also leaving the pitch early. Pochettino later confirmed Pulisic felt tightness in his calf following a knock in training. The manager hopes the issue is minor and the winger can face Turkey in their next fixture.
The United States must still navigate matches against Turkey and Australia to secure top spot in Group D. Pochettino remains cautious despite the euphoria. “When you win, people flatter you,” he stated. “When you lose, it is a catastrophe. We must remain calm.” Former Wales defender Ashley Williams predicted the hosts could reach the semi-finals if their key players stay fit and the team maintains this level of performance.
