Australia have defeated Turkey 2-0 in their opening FIFA World Cup Group D fixture in Vancouver. The Socceroos produced a resilient performance at BC Place to upset their opponents in front of 52,497 spectators.
Tony Popovic’s side entered the contest as significant underdogs, yet they delivered an organised display to record only their fifth victory in World Cup history. The result provides a major boost for the team ahead of their remaining group stage matches.
The opening goal arrived in the 27th minute through Nestory Irankunda. The Watford striker showed excellent skill and calmness during a swift counter-attack to find the net. At 18 years old, he has become the youngest Australian to score at a World Cup finals tournament.
Connor Metcalfe secured the three points with a low drive from distance in the 75th minute. His powerful strike from outside the penalty area gave the Turkish goalkeeper no chance and confirmed Australia’s dominance on the scoreboard.
The standout performer was goalkeeper Patrick Beach. The 22-year-old received a surprise competitive debut ahead of the more experienced Mat Ryan. Beach produced eight crucial stops, the highest tally by any keeper at the tournament so far. His finest moment came when he diverted Abdulkerim Bardakci’s fierce long-range effort onto the post shortly after Australia had taken the lead.
Turkey controlled nearly 70 per cent of possession and managed 22 shots during the match. Despite their attacking pressure, the Turkish side could not penetrate a determined Australian defence, which made 55 clearances throughout the 90 minutes.
Speaking to ITV Sport, head coach Popovic expressed immense pride in his squad. He praised the dedication of his staff and highlighted the importance of tactical decisions made during the match. He also thanked the travelling supporters who filled the stadium.
Goalscorer Irankunda revealed that his celebration honoured Australian football legend Tim Cahill. He named Cahill and Lionel Messi as his biggest inspirations. The forward stated that criticism of the team had provided extra motivation to prove their quality against stronger opposition.
