Australia secured a stunning 2-0 victory against Türkiye in their opening Group D match at the World Cup. The result moves the Socceroos level with the United States at the summit of the group.

Nestory Irankunda opened the scoring in the 27th minute. The 20-year-old Watford forward found the net with a low shot while three defenders surrounded him. He celebrated by striking the corner flag in honour of Australian legend Tim Cahill. This goal makes Irankunda the youngest player to score for Australia at a World Cup finals.

Coach Tony Popovic surprised observers by selecting Patrick Beach as goalkeeper instead of experienced captain Matthew Ryan. Beach repaid this faith with eight vital saves during the match. He produced a brilliant stop to deny Abdulkerim Bardakcı from long range shortly after Australia took the lead.

Türkiye were playing in their first World Cup since 2002, when they reached the semi-finals. Real Madrid midfielder Arda Güler tested Beach with a free-kick in the 57th minute, but the keeper saved it. Juventus talent Kenan Yildiz joined the match at half-time but could not change the result.

Connor Metcalfe doubled Australia’s lead in the 75th minute. He capitalised on an error by Ismail Yüksek to finish clinically. FIFA president Gianni Infantino watched the action from the stands.

The defeat leaves Türkiye at the bottom of the group. They will face Paraguay in their next fixture, while Australia prepare to meet the United States in Seattle.
