Teboho Mokoena displayed raw emotion throughout the evening. The midfielder shed tears during the national anthem and later thumped his badge with pride after converting a vital penalty. His goal rescued a 1-1 draw for South Africa against Czechia and relieved significant pressure on manager Hugo Broos.

The match itself offered limited quality for the spectators. However, the final result provides genuine hope for the African side. They now require a victory against South Korea in their final group fixture to almost certainly secure a place in the next round.

Czechia began the contest with intensity and took the lead after just five minutes. A long throw-in caused confusion in the South African defence, allowing Alexandr Sojka to set up Michal Sadilek for a simple finish. Defender Khuliso Mudau hesitated at the crucial moment and was caught out of position.

The European side should have extended their advantage moments later. Striker Patrik Schick found himself completely unmarked six yards from goal but directed a weak header wide of the post. It was a costly miss that South Africa would later capitalise upon.

Broos’ team struggled to create openings for much of the contest. Their breakthrough arrived in the final quarter when Thapelo Maseko’s long-range strike struck the arm of Pavel Sulc. The referee immediately awarded a penalty, which Mokoena calmly dispatched into the net.

The closing stages produced more excitement than the previous eighty minutes combined. Evidence Makgopa forced a fine save from the goalkeeper during stoppage time. Aubrey Modiba also came close with a powerful effort that was blocked by defender David Zima. The final whistle confirmed a precious point that keeps South Africa’s tournament ambitions intact.
