Iran’s football chiefs are set to file an official grievance with FIFA. They argue that tough restrictions placed on the squad at the World Cup create unequal conditions for their team.
The Football Federation Islamic Republic of Iran (FFIRI) expressed anger after learning the side must reach Los Angeles just one day before Sunday’s vital Group G match against Belgium. Officials had requested a two-day preparation period in the host city.
The protest follows strong comments from head coach Amir Ghalenoei. He claimed Iran receives the worst treatment of any nation at the tournament. Team captain Mehdi Taremi also criticised the arrangements. He stated that recent weeks had been a ‘disaster’ due to logistical headaches.
The problems began after Iran’s opening draw with New Zealand in Los Angeles. Organisers informed the team they could not remain in the city for a recovery session the next day. Instead, they had to fly immediately to their training base in Tijuana, Mexico.
Now, Iran faces similar constraints before facing Belgium. The squad must travel to Los Angeles International Airport on Saturday. The match kicks off at midday local time, which leaves minimal time for acclimatisation. Their first fixture had a 6pm start, allowing more preparation hours.
In a statement released on Friday, the FFIRI said such rules conflict with the principle of providing equal conditions for all competing nations. The federation warned that these limits could damage their preparation process.
The body confirmed it would lodge its dissatisfaction through official channels. It also stressed that the team remains fully focused on defeating Belgium despite these off-pitch challenges.
FIFA has not yet issued a response to the complaint.
