The Netherlands produced a powerful performance to defeat Sweden 5-1 in a one-sided group stage battle. Brian Brobbey and Cody Gakpo both claimed two goals each. Crysencio Summerville completed the scoring with a fine individual effort late in the match.
The Dutch side started with high intensity and controlled possession from the first whistle. They stretched the Swedish defence wide and created chances at will. Brobbey opened the scoring in the fifth minute. He used his strength to beat centre-back Isak Hien and converted a low cross from close range.
The forward doubled his tally before the break. He reacted quickest to a dangerous delivery from Denzel Dumfries on the right wing. Sweden struggled to cope with the physical presence of the Dutch attack. Viktor Gyökeres and Alexander Isak failed to beat goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen despite a few half-chances.
Graham Potter changed his tactics during the hydration break. He switched Sweden’s formation to a back four. The team showed brief improvement and forced a couple of saves. However, the damage was already done.
The Netherlands scored twice more shortly after the restart. Gakpo first tapped home from Dumfries’s cross. He then fired a low shot from twenty yards to make it 4-0. Summerville added the fifth with a skillful run through the middle of the pitch.
The heavy loss leaves Sweden in a difficult position. They must defeat Japan in their next match to avoid an early exit from the tournament.
