Argentine forward Alejo Sarco has completed a permanent transfer to Sporting Gijón, with the LaLiga2 side securing the 20-year-old’s services from Bayer Leverkusen. The Bundesliga champions have retained a buyback option, ensuring they maintain control over the attacker’s future should he flourish in Spain.
Sarco’s move to El Molinón follows a frustrating 18-month spell in Germany that yielded just six Bundesliga appearances. He originally joined Leverkusen as a free agent from Vélez Sarsfield in January 2025, but struggled to secure regular minutes at the BayArena against established competition. Leverkusen sporting director Simon Rolfes explained the rationale behind the transfer, confirming the club’s continued belief in the player’s potential despite his limited outings. “Alejo (Sarco) did not get the playing time he hoped for in his year and a half with us,” Rolfes stated. “With his move to Spain, he now has the opportunity to collect important minutes. We trust him a lot and will follow his development closely.”
The inclusion of a buyback clause allows Leverkusen to re-sign Sarco should he impress in the Spanish second tier, protecting their investment while giving the young forward the regular football necessary for his development.
