Anthony Taylor has announced his retirement from elite refereeing, bringing to a close a 20-year career that established him as one of English football’s most decorated officials. The 47-year-old steps away after overseeing 432 Premier League matches and 163 international fixtures, including his final assignment at this summer’s World Cup last-16 clash between Portugal and Spain.
Domestic dominance
Across 16 top-flight campaigns, Taylor accumulated 668 appointments within England’s professional game. His domestic honours comprise every major final available to a referee. He presided over FA Cup showpieces in 2017 and 2020, the 2015 League Cup final, the 2015 Community Shield, and the 2018 Championship play-off final at Wembley.
International pedigree
Taylor served 14 years on FIFA’s international roster, earning selection for two World Cups and two European Championships. His global portfolio extends to Club World Cups in 2022 and 2025, alongside high-profile UEFA appointments. These included the 2020 Super Cup, the 2021 Nations League final, the 2022 Club World Cup final, the 2023 Europa League final, and a 2024 Champions League semi-final.
Reflections on the role
Acknowledging the toll of sustained scrutiny, Taylor cited the relentless pressure as a factor in his decision. “Officiating at the elite level has been an immense privilege, but the pressure is intense and the scrutiny is constant,” he stated. “The time is now right to step aside and look forward to transitioning to the next chapter of my career.”
He extended gratitude to his assistants Gary and Adam, his refereeing colleagues, and his family for enduring what he termed “immense sacrifices.”
Howard Webb, chief refereeing officer at Pro Ref, led the tributes. “Anthony has been a fantastic servant to the game over many years,” Webb said. “He’s consistently demonstrated over a sustained period why he is one of the best and most successful officials that English football has ever produced.”
Webb emphasised Taylor’s mentorship of emerging officials alongside his on-field achievements, describing his support for colleagues as testament to his character. “We thank him for his immense contribution to the game and wish him every success in the next chapter of his career,” Webb added.
