İlkay Gündoğan has revealed he would consider returning to 1.FC Nürnberg when his current contract with Galatasaray expires, leaving the door open for a homecoming as a player, coach or sporting director.
The 35-year-old midfielder is contracted to the Turkish Süper Lig side until the summer of 2027. Despite having several seasons remaining in Istanbul, Gündoğan maintains a strong emotional attachment to the German club where he spent the formative years of his professional career.
Deep roots in Bavaria
Gündoğan represented Der Club between 2008 and 2011, establishing himself as one of the most exciting young prospects in German football during his three-year stint. His performances eventually earned him a transfer to Borussia Dortmund, launching a trajectory that would see him feature for Manchester City and Barcelona.
Speaking to Sky Germany, the former Germany international emphasised his enduring gratitude towards the city and its football institution. “I still have a very close connection to Nürnberg because the club means a lot to me,” Gündoğan stated. “I’m very grateful to the club and the city. I can definitely imagine returning one day, in whatever role that may be.”

Gündoğan outlined several potential pathways for his return, suggesting his backroom team should prepare for multiple scenarios. “Whether it’s for one or two years as a player or later as a sporting director or coach, everything is possible,” he added.
This flexibility indicates the midfielder is already contemplating his post-playing career while keeping his options open for a sentimental reunion. With his current deal running until 2027, any prospective return would likely see Gündoğan arrive in his late thirties, bringing experience gained at some of Europe’s most demanding clubs.
