Rodri has made clear his desire to join Real Madrid this summer, yet the reigning Ballon d’Or winner faces an uncertain path to the Bernabéu. Despite his willingness to switch clubs, Los Blancos harbour reservations about his fitness record and long-term value that could derail any deal.
According to Diario AS, the Spain international has rejected interest from Barcelona and other European heavyweights in favour of a return to his home city. Paris Saint-Germain and Bayern Munich have both withdrawn from the race once his preference for the white shirt became apparent. Barcelona contacted the midfielder’s entourage but have not approached Manchester City directly, and their interest does not register as a genuine alternative in Rodri’s thinking.
Fitness and valuation concerns
Real Madrid’s hesitation stems from Rodri’s injury history and age. The Times notes that enthusiasm at the Bernabéu has cooled significantly. Before suffering an ACL tear in September 2024, the midfielder missed just 3.4 per cent of available days through injury at Manchester City. Since his return, that figure has risen sharply to 34 per cent. With Rodri turning 30 at the start of next season, the club also questions his resale value compared to younger alternatives.
Financially, the clubs remain apart in their valuations. Manchester City are holding firm at €75 million, while Madrid prefer to negotiate closer to €60 million. Rodri’s contract at the Etihad runs until June 2027, giving the Premier League club little incentive to lower their demands.
Alternative targets emerge
These complications have prompted Madrid to explore other options. Chelsea’s Enzo Fernández and Newcastle’s Bruno Guimarães have emerged as alternatives, though each presents their own challenges. The club are seeking a centrocampista capable of shielding the defence while contributing in advanced areas.
Squad management adds another layer of complexity. Real Madrid currently have room for only one midfield addition, meaning any deal for Rodri would require an outgoing transfer first.
Barcelona’s constraints
Despite Rodri’s on-field chemistry with Spain teammates Pedri and Lamine Yamal, Barcelona cannot offer a viable escape route. Cadena SER reports that after spending €110 million on Anthony Gordon, Karim Adeyemi and Jesse Baesio, finding a further €75 million for Rodri would prove very difficult. Frenkie de Jong’s injury had initially sparked their interest, but they have since learned where the midfielder’s priority lies.
With the transfer window closing, Rodri faces the prospect of remaining at Manchester City unless Real Madrid overcome their doubts and bridge the valuation gap.
