1. FC Magdeburg secured their first victory of the 2. Bundesliga campaign with a dominant 3-0 away triumph over VfL Osnabrück, delivering an emphatic response to their heavy defeat in the previous matchweek.
Alexander Nollenberger emerged as the star of the show, netting a spectacular first-half brace to put the visitors firmly in control before Emmanuel Iyoha added a third after the interval to seal the comprehensive result for manager Petrik Sander.
First-Half Onslaught
Magdeburg established their authority from the opening whistle, pinning Osnabrück back with relentless attacking pressure that left the hosts struggling to gain any foothold in the contest. The visitors were in complete control from minute one, with wave after wave of Magdeburg attacks bombarding the home goal and offering no sign of relief for the defensive unit.
The breakthrough arrived in the 24th minute when Nollenberger collected a quickly taken throw-in on the left flank and unleashed a stunning strike from the edge of the area that flew past the goalkeeper into the top corner to open the scoring.
The full-back doubled his tally just ten minutes later with another exquisite finish. Baris Atik provided the assist with a perfectly weighted ball over the Osnabrück defence, which Nollenberger controlled superbly straight out of the air before driving his shot into the far corner to establish a commanding 2-0 lead at the interval.
Magdeburg could have extended their advantage further during the first period. Mateusz Żukowski struck the post from close range after Nollenberger’s header had been tipped into his path by the goalkeeper, somehow failing to convert with the goal gaping despite the seemingly simple chance.
Second-Half Confirmation
The visitors continued to dictate proceedings after the restart and thought they had added a third when Żukowski raced through on goal and finished calmly, only for the effort to be ruled out for offside. The disallowed goal did little to disrupt Magdeburg’s rhythm, however, as they maintained their stranglehold on the encounter and continued to create opportunities.
Any hopes of an Osnabrück comeback were extinguished with 20 minutes remaining. Luka Hyryläinen threaded a clever pass to Iyoha, who executed a sharp turn to leave his defender behind before curling a precise effort into the far corner to make it 3-0 and put the result beyond doubt.
Magdeburg comfortably saw out the remaining minutes to claim an emphatic three points, much to the delight of their travelling supporters and Sander. The victory not only lifts the spirits after the previous week’s heavy defeat but also provides a crucial platform for the club to build momentum as they establish themselves in Germany’s second tier.
