Bayer Leverkusen sporting director Simon Rolfes has confirmed ongoing negotiations regarding the potential departures of Exequiel Palacios and Ernest Poku, though emphasised that neither transfer is completed despite interest from Ipswich Town and Fiorentina.

Speaking following Leverkusen’s 4-0 DFB-Pokal victory over Wehen Wiesbaden on Saturday, Rolfes addressed speculation surrounding the Argentina midfielder and teenage striker. He verified that discussions have advanced for both players but stressed that definitive agreements remain elusive.

Rolfes told reporters there is “no agreement” for either player. “There have been talks, that’s true,” he said. “But in neither case is it clear that a deal will happen.”

Ipswich increase Palacios bid

Palacios has attracted strong interest from Premier League newcomers Ipswich Town, who have reportedly tabled an improved offer for the 25-year-old World Cup winner. The Suffolk club initially proposed approximately €20 million, but subsequent negotiations have seen their bid rise to €30 million including add-ons.

Nevertheless, Leverkusen are holding out for a fee in the region of €35 million to €40 million. Rolfes confirmed Ipswich “have moved a little,” though he added the proposal is “not in the way we would like.”

Fiorentina close on Poku

Meanwhile, Serie A side Fiorentina are reportedly on the verge of securing Poku’s transfer to Italy, though Rolfes confirmed no deal is finalised for the 19-year-old forward. The Germany youth international has attracted attention following his breakthrough into Leverkusen’s senior setup.

With the transfer window entering its final phase, Leverkusen are maintaining firm negotiating positions on both assets. Palacios, who joined from River Plate in 2020, played a crucial role in the club’s historic Bundesliga and DFB-Pokal double last season, while Poku represents a highly-rated homegrown prospect.

Negotiations are expected to continue as both Ipswich and Fiorentina attempt to meet Leverkusen’s valuation before the deadline.
