Real Madrid TV has resumed its contentious referee-analysis videos following the club’s 2-1 La Liga victory over Espanyol, reigniting a dispute that has pitted the European champions against league officials, rival clubs and Spain’s football federation.
The club channel criticised officiating decisions during the match, focusing on calls the programme considered too lenient. This marks a return to a format in which the broadcaster scrutinises refereeing decisions before and after fixtures, often presenting them from the club’s perspective.
A Divisive Format Returns
The revival places Real Madrid back at the centre of a heated debate over the influence of clubs on match officials. The channel’s referee coverage triggered significant friction in 2024, when Sevilla filed a formal complaint alleging the videos amounted to a campaign of persecution and harassment against officials assigned to their match at the Bernabéu.
The Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) opened an investigation into the broadcasts last year. Spain’s refereeing-body chief Luis Medina Cantalejo publicly criticised the practice, while Barcelona president Joan Laporta described the videos as “shameful” and urged the federation to take action against what he viewed as undue pressure on referees.
Accusations of Victimhood
LaLiga president Javier Tebas has accused the club of deliberately constructing a narrative of victimhood around refereeing decisions. The tension escalated in February during a difficult run of three La Liga matches in which Carlo Ancelotti’s side dropped seven points.
Following the recent victory over Espanyol, the club wrote to the RFEF and Spain’s Sports Ministry to formally contest the decision not to dismiss an Espanyol player during the game. Real Madrid subsequently obtained access to audio recordings of discussions between the on-field referee and the video assistant referee.
The club channel’s renewed focus on officiating analysis demonstrates that public criticism of referees remains a prominent element of Real Madrid’s communications strategy, despite the ongoing federation investigation and widespread condemnation from rival clubs and league authorities across Spanish football.
