The Italian Football Federation (FIGC) has formally withdrawn its support for Gianni Infantino’s bid to remain FIFA President, citing concerns over his controversial plans to attract private investment into world football’s showpiece events.

FIGC President Giovanni Malagò released a statement on Wednesday confirming the decision, which comes ahead of elections scheduled for March 2027. The federation said the move would express its position regarding Infantino’s recent initiatives “in a clear and transparent way”.
The withdrawal centres on proposals to sell stakes in competitions, including the World Cup, to external investors. These plans have generated significant unease among traditional football authorities who fear commercial encroachment on the sport’s governing structures.
Malagò emphasised that Italy would maintain close ties with European football’s governing body. “We will continue to work alongside UEFA and the other European associations to promote an idea of football based on merit and sustainability, putting fans at the centre,” he said.
Election implications
The FIGC’s stance aligns it with UEFA President Aleksander Ceferin, with whom the federation said it acts in full agreement. The statement stressed a commitment to governance that prioritises sporting merit over financial speculation.
Several other national associations and high-profile individuals have already withdrawn support for Infantino ahead of the 2027 ballot, though the Italian decision carries particular weight given the nation’s status as a European football powerhouse and four-time World Cup winner.
The presidential election is scheduled for March 2027. Infantino, who has held the position since 2016, now faces the prospect of campaigning without the backing of one of his home continent’s most significant federations.
