Saudi Pro League side Al-Ettifaq have opened discussions with Olympique de Marseille over a move for Canada international Derek Cornelius, according to journalist Fabrizio Romano. The 28-year-old defender could still leave the French club before the Saudi transfer window shuts on 6 September, with both sides now working to finalise terms in the coming days.
Rayo Vallecano collapse paves way for Saudi move
Cornelius only joined Marseille in the summer of 2024 but has struggled to establish himself in the first team. Across his debut campaign in Ligue 1, he managed 26 appearances in all competitions, often finding himself on the periphery of the squad despite arriving with international experience.
He spent the previous season on loan at Scottish Premiership club Rangers, where he made 12 appearances, scored one goal and provided one assist. That spell in Glasgow offered regular football, yet upon his return to the south of France he was unable to cement a long-term starting role.
Earlier in the current window, Cornelius appeared close to joining La Liga side Rayo Vallecano. However, that transfer was ultimately blocked after the clubs failed to reach an agreement, leaving the defender stranded at the Stade Vélodrome. With the Spanish option now definitively closed, Al-Ettifaq have emerged as a serious suitor keen to secure his signature before the Saudi deadline.
Canada regular at a career crossroads
On the international stage, Cornelius has been a consistent presence for the Canucks. He has earned 48 caps and scored one goal for Canada, and he featured at the most recent World Cup. That pedigree is likely to appeal to Al-Ettifaq as they look to strengthen their defensive ranks.
Time is now a critical factor. With the Saudi window shutting on 6 September, Al-Ettifaq and Marseille must move quickly to agree on terms. Should the deal collapse, Cornelius would likely remain at Marseille until the next transfer period, extending his uncertain spell in Ligue 1.
Should the Saudi club reach an agreement with Marseille, Cornelius would depart France after just over a year. The next few days will prove decisive in determining whether the defender secures a fresh start in the Middle East or stays put beyond the deadline.
