Dino Toppmöller is reportedly on the verge of being sacked as manager of RC Lens, a decision that comes barely three months after he took the helm. The German coach, who succeeded Pierre Sage following his departure for Crystal Palace, has overseen just six matches for the French club.
Despite a short tenure, Toppmöller led Lens to victory in the Trophée des Champions and secured a win in the UEFA Champions League. However, the club’s domestic form has been less impressive, with Lens winning only one of their first four Ligue 1 matches. They currently sit 10th in the league table, and recently drew 2-2 with newly promoted Le Mans FC.
Internal Tensions and Performance
While the recent Ligue 1 results have been a concern, reports suggest that internal issues may have also contributed to the impending dismissal. Toppmöller was reportedly regarded internally as a disruptive figure. He is also said to have opposed a decision made by his superiors concerning Morgado, a colleague.
His predecessor, Pierre Sage, had guided Lens to a second-place finish in Ligue 1 and a Coupe de France trophy before moving to Crystal Palace. Toppmöller’s appointment was intended to build on this success, but his brief spell has been marked by a mix of early silverware and domestic struggles.
What Happens Next
Should Toppmöller’s departure be confirmed, assistant manager Yannick Cahuzac is expected to take over as interim manager. Cahuzac, a former FC Lorient assistant, has reportedly been viewed as a potential long-term candidate for the top job, and these plans could now be accelerated.
